Skin

  • Skin is the body's largest organ and forms a protective interface with the environment.
  • The epidermis is an avascular, keratinized stratified squamous epithelium derived from ectoderm.
  • Avascular means lacking blood vessels, keratinized means reinforced with keratin protein, and stratified squamous epithelium means many layers of flattened surface cells.
  • The dermis is connective tissue derived mainly from mesoderm and contains vessels, nerves, glands, and hair-related epidermal structures.
  • Ectoderm and mesoderm are embryonic tissue layers that give rise to different adult body structures.
  • The epidermis is thickest on the palms and soles.
  • The fatty hypodermis lies deep to the skin and helps insulate and cushion the body.
  • Skin protects against injury, contributes sensory information, regulates temperature, participates in vitamin D production, and can absorb selected substances.
