Chapter: 19-Female Reproductive System

Block: 45 / 45 Bullets: 7

Mammary gland secretions

  • Mammary gland secretion has two major forms: colostrum early after birth and mature milk later after birth. Both provide nutrients and immune protection.
  • Colostrum is a protein-rich, yellowish fluid produced during the first few days after birth.
  • Colostrum is rich in lymphocytes, monocytes, lactalbumin, fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, and immunoglobulin A (IgA).
  • Milk begins to be secreted by the third or fourth day after birth.
  • It contains caseins, immunoglobulin A, lactalbumin, lipid droplets, and lactose.
  • Milk ejection occurs through a reflex triggered by stimuli associated with suckling.
  • The reflex releases oxytocin from axons in the posterior pituitary, causing myoepithelial-cell contraction that forces milk into larger ducts and out of the breast.
